Spring Prep!

Finally! Spring time in Minnesota. The few months we wait for each year! Now that our harsh winter is gone let’s talk about how to make sure your home is ready for spring. Every year we all do our own thing when prepping for spring. Like putting our winter jackets away, dusting off the flip flops and getting the lawn mower ready. There can be quite a few things we miss when we are getting ready for spring.

Let’s start by checking the exterior of your home. Look at your roof for any lifting shingles, debris or visible signs that your shingles may have been damaged this winter. Next move along to your gutters, if you can safely get a ladder and climb up to look at them. You are checking to make sure they are still attached properly and if you do not have a gutter protection, you want to check to make sure they aren’t clogged with debris from last season. Check your downspouts to make sure they are diverting water away from the foundation.

Next look at your siding, any chips? Missing paint? Peeling or warped siding? These are all signs that you need to get your siding replaced. Don’t let your damaged siding go un-noticed or un-repaired. The sooner you get it fixed, the better!

Move along to your windows now. Do any of them look foggy or cracked? Once you have cleaned your windows on the inside and out see if any of your windows have fog between the panes. This could mean your windows have a seal failure. Spring is the best time to get those replaced so you can enjoy the efficiency of your new windows through the summer.

Now let’s step inside the home and talk about a few spring prep tips in there. You should check your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms often but this is a good reminder to do it now. Replace the filters in your furnace. Clean the faucets and shower heads by soaking them to make sure you get any buildup out of there. Lastly, bring out the spring clothes and enjoy the beautiful weather Minnesota has to offer!
